AIKEN, S.C. (September 26, 2023) — Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC), the liquid waste contractor at Savannah River Site (SRS), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Benedict College (BC) with the goal of helping prepare students for future careers at the Savannah River Site (SRS).

Benedict College is a private, co-educational historically black college or university (HBCU) located in Columbia, South Carolina, offering several high-demand fields of study in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), including Cyber Security and Computer Science.

The MOU helps students prepare for careers in STEM fields that benefit SRMC and the students of BC with the focus on work experience with internships or apprenticeships and opportunities for full-time employment.

SRMC President and Program Manager Dave Olson is confident that the MOU will foster a more formal, mutually beneficial relationship between BC and SRMC.

“This MOU puts Benedict College students in a better position to learn of Savannah River Mission Completion’s employment opportunities and to possibly obtain full-time employment upon graduating,” Olson said. “The MOU makes available the SRMC leadership and other resources for presentations to BC students and faculty, as well as an opportunity for them to tour SRS.”

Benedict College President and CEO Dr. Roslyn Clark Artis said the collaboration offers both organizations opportunities to enable all students to utilize STEM-based knowledge gained through their courses in a hands-on manner.

“We are grateful for SRMC’s investment in Benedict College and our students,” Dr. Clark Artis said. “It is a wonderful opportunity for our students to gain real-world experience in an interactive, practical environment. This MOU will be the impetus for future collaborations between our organizations.”

The MOU between SRMC and BC is effective from September 18, 2023, to October 30, 2025, and can be renewed.

SRMC comprises parent company BWX Technologies, Inc. with partners Amentum and Fluor. Its team brings the capabilities necessary to accelerate cleanup at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site through safe nuclear operations, optimized and integrated mission execution, and strong corporate governance.
