SRMC Earns National Awards for Commitment to Safety

AIKEN, S.C. (May 15, 2024) — Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) is a recipient of national recognition for its commitment to continued safe performance.

Operators at Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) wear appropriate personal protective equipment and demonstrate procedure compliance during a job at the Savannah River Site’s Saltstone Production Facility. SRMC recently won national awards for demonstrating a commitment to working safely.

SRMC is the Liquid Waste contractor responsible for reducing the risk of Cold War era radioactive liquid waste stored in underground tanks at the Savannah River Site (SRS) by removing and stabilizing the waste and operationally closing the waste tanks.

The company was awarded three prestigious awards from the National Safety Council (NSC): the Occupational Excellence Award, the Perfect Record Award, and the Superior Safety Performance Award. NSC is a mission-based, nonprofit organization focused on eliminating the leading cause of preventable death and injury.

SRMC earned the 2024 Occupational Excellence Award for exhibiting exemplary safety performance in 2023. To qualify for this award, a company must report an injury and illness incidence rate involving days away from work that is equal-to or less-than 50 percent of organizations in the same industry.

SRMC also achieved the Perfect Record Award for operating more than 12 million employee work hours without an occupational injury or illness involving days away from work.

SRMC Construction Services, comprising approximately 800 craft workers, has worked more than 38 million safe hours, earning the team NSC’s Superior Safety Performance Award. This award recognizes companies that have achieved a minimum of 10 consecutive “perfect record” years, operating without incurring an occupational injury or illness resulting in days away from work. The construction team within the SRS Liquid Waste Program has been continuing this achievement since 1998.

SRMC President and Program Manager Dave Olson said these awards prove that safety is a core value at SRMC.

“A safe work environment is no accident. We must plan our work, plan our work environment, and plan the execution of every task. By remaining focused on the job at-hand, we can continue to maintain a safer workplace,” Olson said. “The safety awards earned from the National Safety Council are tangible achievements showing that Savannah River Mission Completion’s safety culture is positive and proactive.”

SRMC comprises parent company BWX Technologies, Inc. with partners Amentum and Fluor. Its team brings the capabilities necessary to accelerate cleanup at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site through safe nuclear operations, optimized and integrated mission execution, and strong corporate governance.
