SRMC Intern Ignites her Passion for Entrepreneurship

AIKEN, S.C. (July 15, 2024) — Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC) intern Gabriella Thomas has made it her mission to gain all the knowledge she can about entrepreneurship.

Through her summer internship with SRMC, the liquid waste contractor at the Savannah River Site (SRS), she has experienced what it’s like to pursue her passion for business at an early stage in her college career.

A year ago, Thomas and her parents, who are retired Army veterans, moved to Aiken, S.C., from Wiesbaden, Germany. She begins classes at the University of South Carolina Aiken this fall as a business major with a minor in international relations as a sophomore.

Since she was young, Thomas has always loved the thought of being an entrepreneur. When she was 12 years old, she sold loom creations. In high school, she started her own cosmetics business.

“It made me feel good to know that I could physically make something that can contribute to someone’s happiness,” Thomas said.

That feeling is what inspired her to study and eventually become her own boss.

She also had great role models to show her what to do when she acquired her business; one of them being her father.

“My dad owned a restaurant back when we lived in Texas so I shadowed him as much as I could, and he taught me a lot when it came to being an entrepreneur.” Thomas said.

She is applying her burgeoning business skills and learning even more while interning this summer in SRMC’S Procurement Compliance and Systems group where she has been supporting the procurement system administration by helping implement new systems, which includes revisions to existing procedures and training that is required resulting from system updates.

“Coming to work every day has been so enjoyable,” Thomas said. “I will use what I’ve learned about the supply chain system and logistical aspects of owning a business and eventually apply it to my own business one day.”

SRMC comprises parent company BWX Technologies, Inc. with partners Amentum and Fluor. Its team brings the capabilities necessary to accelerate cleanup at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Site through safe nuclear operations, optimized and integrated mission execution, and strong corporate governance.
